Simply Tasty Mirchi Dal |
There are many variations to dal that is cooked in each Maharashtrian household and this one is my favorite.
Thanks Anjali for sharing this wonderful recipe. This one is my favourite as it combines kokum flavour with hint of sambar flavour, that is South meets West... just awesome

Ingredients :
one cup cooked toor dal
˝ cup sliced onion
1 tsp grated coconut
1 kokum
˝ tsp jaggery
chopped coriander
salt as per taste
Spices :
3 chopped green chillies
pinch of sambar powder
Tempering :
˝ tsp mustard seeds
pinch of asafoetida
pinch of turmeric powder
5 curry leaves
Directions :
| 1 | Heat oil in a pan, add all the ingredients listed under tempering in the order given. |
| 2 | Add chopped green chillies. |
| 3 | Add sliced onion and then put the lid for two minute. |
| 4 | Add toor dal. |
| 5 | Add coriander and coconut, jaggery, kokum and salt. Bring it a boil on medium flame.and let it simmer for 10 minutes so that the flavours mingle well. |
Note :
- Use just a pinch of sambar masala as we are not making sambar it just add nice flavor to the dal.
- Instead of kokum you can use three drop of tamarind paste or puree of one tomato can be used. While using tomato puree cook it with onions for 5 minutes or till oil separates from the mixture.
- Soak kokum in warm water for 15 minutes so that it softens and releases it flavour.
